Hyperpigmentation on the body — darkened elbows, knees, underarms, and inner thighs — is one of the most common skin concerns for South Asian skin and one of the least consistently addressed by body care products. This lotion treats the body with the same active ingredient seriousness as the face.

What This Is

The Body Brightening Lotion is a daily body moisturiser with a brightening active profile designed specifically for the hyperpigmentation concerns most common in South Asian skin: post-inflammatory darkening of joints (elbows, knees), friction-darkening of the inner thigh and underarm area, and the general uneven tone that results from UV exposure across the body surface. It contains the actives necessary for genuine hyperpigmentation treatment rather than simply the emollient ingredients of a standard body lotion.

The Brightening Actives

Niacinamide at 5% — the same concentration as in the face serum, applied to the body where hyperpigmentation concerns are equally present but less consistently treated. At 5%, niacinamide's melanin transfer inhibition produces visible improvement in post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation at eight to twelve weeks of consistent use. Alpha arbutin at 2% — a glycoside of hydroquinone that inhibits tyrosinase (the enzyme responsible for melanin synthesis) without the regulatory concerns associated with hydroquinone itself. Alpha arbutin is highly stable in formulation and has consistent evidence for reducing melanin synthesis at concentrations of 1–2%. Combined with niacinamide's melanin transfer inhibition, the two mechanisms address hyperpigmentation at two different points in the pigmentation process — synthesis (alpha arbutin) and distribution (niacinamide). Kojic acid at 1% — a natural compound produced by Aspergillus fungi that chelates the copper ion at the active site of tyrosinase, providing an additional tyrosinase inhibition mechanism that is complementary rather than redundant with alpha arbutin. The combination of three hyperpigmentation actives working through three different mechanisms produces a more comprehensive and more consistent result than any single active at higher concentration.

The Exfoliation Component

Lactic acid at 5% — a gentle AHA particularly appropriate for body use because its larger molecular weight than glycolic acid makes it slower to penetrate and therefore less irritating on the thicker-skinned areas of the body. Lactic acid provides surface exfoliation that removes the dead skin cell accumulation responsible for the ashy, dull appearance of darker skin tones, and that is a cofactor in the darkening of pressure-exposed areas like elbows and knees where dead cell accumulation concentrates pigmentation. The 5% concentration is effective for gentle daily exfoliation in a leave-on body lotion without the irritation that higher concentrations cause on sensitive areas.

The Moisturising Base

A lightweight, fast-absorbing lotion base — appropriate for body use where the large surface area and the requirement for non-greasy absorption make the heavier emollient bases of face moisturisers impractical. Glycerin at 8% provides the humectant hydration appropriate for body skin's higher moisture requirements. Shea butter at 3% provides emollient richness at the elbows, knees, and heels where skin is significantly drier than the rest of the body. Niacinamide's ceramide stimulation benefit is particularly relevant in a body lotion context, where the skin barrier of the body is less consistently maintained than the face due to the lower frequency of body moisturiser application in most people's routines.

How to Use

Apply to clean skin after bathing, when the skin is still slightly damp — the moisture on the skin surface enhances the humectant activity of the glycerin. Apply to all body skin, with particular attention to the elbows, knees, underarms, and inner thighs where hyperpigmentation is most concentrated. Allow to absorb before dressing — approximately two minutes at the areas of application. Use daily for the twelve-week period required to see full brightening results, then maintain with three to four applications per week. Apply SPF to body areas exposed to sun — the brightening actives are working to reduce existing pigmentation and the UV exposure that created it should be prevented from creating new pigmentation simultaneously.
